Dumbbell sets vs adjustable dumbbells: what you actually pay
For most home gyms, adjustable dumbbells cover a full range of weights for far less money and space than a set of fixed dumbbells. Fixed dumbbells win when several people train at once, when you change weights constantly, or when you want something you can drop. The prices below update every few hours.
Fixed dumbbells: what a pound costs
| Type | Pairs and singles | Sets |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber hex | $2.63/lb | $2.40/lb |
| Urethane | $3.17/lb | $3.85/lb |
- Rubber hex dumbbells are the cheapest per pound. They’re the standard home-gym choice, and the hex shape keeps them from rolling.
- Urethane costs more for a tougher, smell-free coating that holds up better to drops and daily use.
- Rubber hex sets usually cost a little less per pound than buying the same pairs one at a time. Urethane sets often don’t, so compare before you buy.

Cost per pound hides how much weight a set really is. A 5 to 50 lb set in 5 lb steps is ten pairs, which adds up to 550 lb of iron. Even at a good price per pound, that’s a large bill, and a set that size needs a dumbbell rack too (storage).

Comparing adjustables per pound is misleading, because one adjustable pair replaces a whole set. A pair that goes from 5 to 50 lb does the job of all ten fixed pairs above. When we wrote this (October 2026), a quality adjustable pair with that range cost less than half of a fixed 5 to 50 lb set, before counting the rack. Some adjustables, PowerBlock’s for example, can be expanded later with add-on kits instead of buying a heavier pair.
The trade-offs that matter
- Changing weight. Fixed dumbbells: put one pair down, pick up the next. Adjustables take a few seconds per change. That’s fine for most workouts, slower for drop sets or circuits.
- Dropping them. Adjustable dumbbells have moving parts and generally shouldn’t be dropped. Fixed rubber or urethane dumbbells are made for it.
- Feel. Adjustables tend to be longer and blockier than fixed dumbbells, and some have plates, locks or other parts around the handle that get in the way. That makes them awkward on some exercises, like goblet squats or pullovers where you hold the end of the dumbbell, and some people notice it on presses and curls too.
- More than one person. Two people can’t share one adjustable pair at different weights. A fixed set handles that easily.
- Space. A full fixed set and its rack take a wall. An adjustable pair fits in a corner.
Which should you buy?
If I had to get started on a budget, I would pick up some adjustable dumbbells and a flat bench. There are tons of exercises you can do with just that.
How we compared
Every price comes from our collector, which reads each store directly every few hours. Cost per pound uses the total weight of a pair or set, read from the product and option names. Sets count only when their weight range and increments are listed, and adjustables are left out of the per-pound numbers. In stock only, shipping not included. How we track prices.
